Is ThoughtsPlus free?
Yes! ThoughtsPlus is a personal open-source project. It is completely free to download and use with no subscriptions or hidden fees.
Where is my data stored?
Your data is stored locally on your device — you choose the location. By default, we recommend using OneDrive so your data syncs automatically across all your Windows devices. This is a smart way to get cloud sync without paying for a subscription service. No data is ever sent to our servers (We can't afford any anyways).
Does it work on Mac or Linux?
Currently, ThoughtsPlus is optimised for Windows. Mac and Linux versions can be built from source but are not officially distributed yet.
How do updates work?
If you download via the Microsoft Store, updates are automatic. GitHub releases (up to V5.4.0) do not have auto-update functionality, which is why we've moved to the Microsoft Store for new versions.
Do I need an API key for AI features?
Yes. AI features like quick add and briefings require a Gemini API key. You can get one for free from Google AI Studio, which offers a generous free tier more than enough for regular use. Your API key is stored locally and never leaves your device.
Is my data private?
Absolutely. ThoughtsPlus has no telemetry, no analytics, and no tracking. Everything stays on your machine unless you choose to sync via OneDrive or similar.
Where can I find old versions?
All releases up to V5.4.0 are available on GitHub Releases. Note that these versions will not receive automatic updates.
How can I contribute or report bugs?
ThoughtsPlus is open source! You can report bugs, request features, or contribute code on GitHub. We appreciate all feedback and contributions.
